Boscombe Reef, Europe’s first artificial surf reef finally opened to the public last week.
The reef, which is situated 220m offshore to the east of Boscombe Pier, Bournemouth, is the size of a football pitch and has been constructed from 55 giant sandbags.
The artificial reef does not create waves but is positioned to act as a ramp, pushing waves upwards to create better quality surfing waves.
Use of the artificial surf reef is free, however, it is not suitable for novice surfers.
