British bank holiday dates 2009

Now that my extended Christmas holiday is over, it’s time to get back to work, and…start thinking about the next holiday!

Whether it’s a two week holiday, a short break, or even a weekend away it helps to have a ‘light at the end of the tunnel’, to help get you through the working week and banish those winter blues.

Knowing the bank holiday dates can help when planning a holiday, so that you could turn a weekend into a four-day break by using a day’s holiday and tagging it on to the bank holiday. It also helps to know if a bank holiday occurs during your time on holiday.

There are eight standard bank holiday dates which occur in England and Wales and which are observed by most of the countries making up the British Isles, however, there are variations.

For those of you who are uncertain about the public holidays in Britain here’s a list:

Eight main bank holidays of England and Wales 2009:

1 January New Year’s Day
10 April – Good Friday
13 April – Easter Monday (except Scotland)
4 May – UK and Republic of Ireland
25 May – UK, spring bank holiday
31 August (except Scotland)
25 December – Christmas Day
28 December – Boxing Day (UK & Republic of Ireland)

Scotland has the additional days:

3 August (Scotland & Republic of Ireland)
30 November – St Andrew’s Day

Businesses and schools do not always close on Scottish public holidays and banks in Scotland observe the bank holidays of England and Wales.

That was a really useful post! I was looking for UK hotels, but this will definitely come in handy as I can never remember when the next bank holiday is… Thanks!
